Support to Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation and Guangdong Police College

(March 30, 2006 V Guangzhou and Hong Kong) The Guangdong Police Foundation and Guangdong Police College today announced a donation of RMB 25 million from the Li Ka-shing Foundation (“LKSF”) and Hutchison Whampoa Limited (“HWL”) to support the Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation and to build a swimming pool complex.

The LKSF is contributing RMB 15 million to support the Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation to help provide proper medical care for public security officers who are suffer from work-related injuries or major illnesses.

HWL is donating RMB 10 million to help build a swimming pool complex, which will be named after Hutchison Whampoa in recognition of the company’s contribution.

Since its establishment in 1980, the Li Ka-shing Foundation has set up a “Just in Time Fund” to offer timely and direct relief for natural catastrophes, special and emergency situations, and work related injuries suffered by civil servants. Over a period of more than 20 years, this special fund has offered relief of over HK$280 million in Mainland China, Hong Kong and overseas.

The ceremony to acknowledge the donation was held today in Guangzhou and was officiated by Mr Liang Guoju, Director-General of the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, and Mr Chen Yuchuan, Secretary of Party Committee and Vice Chairman of Guangdong Police College.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Liang said that Mr Li Ka-shing, founder of the LKSF and HWL Chairman, is a keen supporter of Guangdong Province police officers and their education, and considers this programme to promote the health and well-being of Guangdong police officers to be very meaningful.

Mr Liang further commended Mr Li on his decades-long effort to nurture a culture of giving by contributing to education, healthcare, culture and community welfare projects. The LKSF’s total commitments and donations now amount to more than HK$7.6 billion.

Mr Liang said, “We are grateful for the support of Mr Li and Hutchison Whampoa Limited. With this contribution, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department will enhance its basic law enforcement infrastructure by further strengthening its public security work and building up a strong team of public security officers.”

Speaking on behalf of Mr Li, Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited Executive Director Mr Davy Chung expressed high regard for the Guangdong Province Public Security Department and its commitment to serving and protecting the public.

Mr Chung said, “Through this contribution, Mr Li hopes to encourage wider public support for the Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation, enabling it to provide proper medical care for police officers. The new swimming centre will serve the College’s future development and provide an ideal venue for physical training.”

The Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation was established in June 2005 to provide funds for medical care to public security officers who suffer work-related injuries or major illnesses.

The Guangdong Police College is the only four-year college for public security officers in Southern China. The College has produced almost 700,000 graduates since its founding 57 years ago. More than 6,000 officers have received training at the College for each of the past two years.

HWL is a multi-national corporation that has operations and investments in 54 countries and employs more than 200,000 people. Its five core businesses are ports and related services; telecommunications; property and hotels; retail; energy, infrastructure, finance, investments and others.

Over 200 people attended today’s ceremony, including representatives from the Li Ka-shing Foundation and Hutchison Whampoa Limited, as well as Guangdong Province officials, officers from the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, and the faculty and students of the Guangdong Police College.
