It is a great pleasure to be here today and to welcome you all to the opening ceremony of the Buddhist Po Ching Home for Aged Women.
Demand for quality services for the elderly is ever increasing. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with different organizations to provide such services, which I feel is very meaningful. This is the fifth home for the elderly in which I have participated. From my contact with the residents and staff of these homes, I have been able to share the joy and satisfaction they feel in having access to comprehensive services and facilities. A modern and well-equipped home for the elderly not only offers professional care for the aged on a daily basis, but also encourages them to participate in group activities so that they can keep in close touch with the community. I believe that the SAR Government has set down a long-term policy on elderly welfare that meets the needs of society. I further believe that the administration will continue to encourage people to contribute to elderly services.
I have always been a disciple of the Buddhist teaching of universal love. Our elderly have contributed a great deal to their families and to society. They are the builders of prosperity and the source of all wisdom. Taking care of the elderly is everyone’s responsibility. The younger generation, in particular, should carry on the tradition of caring for the aged even as they receive a modern education.
Following the ideals of his grandmaster Reverend Po Ching, Reverend Kok Kong founded and led the Heung Hoi Ching Kok Lin Association for more than 50 years. His efforts in promoting social services is truly admirable. Having dedicated this project to the fond memory of my late wife, it is particularly meaningful for me to play a role in the redevelopment of this decades-old Home by offering financing and expertise.
Lastly, I take this opportunity to thank all those who were involved in the redevelopment of this project, and to express my highest admiration to the staff of the Home. Your love and perseverance are the cornerstones of this Home’s success. Thank you very much.
