Project Goals and Purpose
(1)Project New Life For Cleft Lip Surgery In Western China (Two Phases)
Project New Life was the largest project in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Affairs to date, apart from disaster relief efforts.
The programme covered a network of 33 hospitals, serving as many as 30,000 children with cleft lips from low-income families.
The project brought about quality and standardised treatments, which included corrective surgeries and postoperative care such as voice rehabilitation, mental health counselling, and preventive education, publicity, and volunteer programmes.
In 2012, the project merged into the National Health Insurance effort, ensuring coverage for all patients in need.
(2)Pediatric Hernia Repair Programme In Western China
Hernias have been a common illness in Western Chinese regions like Qinghai. After consulting experts in Qinhai region, Mr Li Ka-shing decided to launch Project New Life, which was later expanded to cover all of Western China.
Together with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, from 2009 to 2014 the project appointed 70 hospitals across 12 western provinces, autonomous regions, and Henan Province — benefitting over 30,000 children.
The project acted as a model for a nationwide medical social welfare system.
The Foundation hoped that the project would raise awareness about the health concerns in Western China.
