Project Goals and Purpose

• The Foundation has supported the development of the University of Hong Kong for a number of years, including funding for the Chong Yuet Ming Building, the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre and setting up the Li Chong Yuet Ming Buddhist Studies Research Fund with the HKU Centre of Buddhist Studies. The donation was Asia’s largest single donation, indicating Mr Li’s recognition of HKU’s academic excellence and his effort to advocate a new culture of contribution.
• Other significant projects include: Donating HK$1 billion to the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in 2005. Mr Li shares HKU’s mission and pursuit of excellence. His donation helped catapult HKU’s development ability and its search for excellence and strengthened the university’s role in China’s economic growth and globalisation. Mr Li’s donation has also strengthened the foundation of the faculty’s research and academic development, especially in medical and biotechnology, lifting HKU to a new pedestal of development and growth in teaching and learning.
• Establishing connections with the HKU and the Faculty of Medicine through long-term partnerships, facilitating HKU’s participation in top university medical technology research projects, enabling medical students to join the international market. Their achievements will enhance Hong Kong’s core competitiveness, open up new horizons in R&D of medical technology, and create new economic and job opportunities to the future benefit of Hong Kong.
• Funding the MARS Scanner and related research in 2019. MARS is the first colour x-ray scanner introduced to Hong Kong by the Foundation. MARS scanners’ multi-energy spectral photon-counting technology outperforms the traditional black-and-white CT to produce better image quality with reduced beam hardening artifacts. It also allows advanced detection, multiple contrast agents, and tissue contrast to increase diagnostic accuracy.
• Donating HK$20.8 million to support medical graduates from the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in 2020. Graduates in 2020 and 2021 will each receive a gift of HK$50,000.
• Funding the “Low-Temperature Electron Microscope Research Centre” at the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine with HK$100 million. A new microscope, Thermo Scientific – Krios G4 300 kV Cryo-TEM, was provided to facilitate research on protein structures that contribute to drug development, cancer, infectious and neurodegenerative disease treatments.
• Donation of HK$4.1 million to support radiological examination at HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine for patients with gastroenterology and liver diseases in Queen Mary Hospital.
• A donation of HK$10 million was given to the Department of Medicine of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in 2021 to set up the Li Ka Shing Medical Fellowship for Internal Medicine.
