Project Goals and Purpose

  • (1)The New Library of Peking University
    • The New Library of Peking University is a modern, world-class library. The construction started in July 1996 and was completed in May 1998 in time for the university’s centenary celebration. The library opened its doors to users in mid-December 1998.
    • The new aggregate area of the library consists of more than 51,000 square metres, housing 6.5 million books and 4,000 seats, making it Asia’s largest university library at the time.
    • The project enabled the university to expand its collection of high value Chinese literature.
  • (2)Future Internet Technology Research Centre (FIT) Tsinghua University
    • Opening in December 2003 and covering an area of more than 30,000 square metres, FIT will see more comprehensive applications of the Internet in such areas as medical and health, national security, distance learning and crisis management. The infrastructure of technological research will form the focal point of research for China’s future IT development, and enhance China’s competitiveness in such frontier in the 21st century.
    • This meaningful research project will yield significant findings that can contribute to Internet 2 technology, the development of science education, and the country’s goal of “revitalization through science and education.”
