22 February 2018

(22nd February 2018, Hong Kong) Today, on the seventh day of Chinese New Year, 20 ParknShop volunteers led by Mr. Dominic Lai, Group Managing Director of A.S. Watson Group and Ms. Malina Ngai, Chief Operating Officer of A.S. Watson Group, came to Food Angel’s Community Center to prepare hot meals and gift packs for the elderly.

As volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare hot meals, Mr. Li Ka-shing, Chairman of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, appeared to surprise the volunteers and elderly at the Center. Mr. Li wished all the elderly good health and good fortune, and joked that he would soon reach his 90s. Mr. Li enjoyed a warm meal with the elderly and brought fruits and rice for the elderly to take home.

Ms. Hedy Ko, Co-founder of Food Angel along with Mr. Lai introduced to Mr. Li the successful cooperation between Food Angel and ParknShop for the past six years – from ParknShop donating food to Food Angel and the latter to prepare hot meals to the needy in the community. So far more than 3.5 million hot meals and 300,000 food packs have been produced benefiting almost 4 million people. Mr. Lai emphasized “The success of our co-operation with Food Angel is driven by ParknShop’s strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and the enthusiastic support from our colleagues.”

Mr. Li was very pleased to hear this so he, on behalf of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, donated HK$10 million to Food Angel to extend its services. At the same time, Mr. Li pledged that more funds would be donated to various social enterprises and organizations across Hong Kong.

Ms. Ko thanked Mr. Li for his strong support for Food Angel, “On behalf of Food Angel I want to thank Mr. Li for his support! Since its establishment, Food Angel has been working closely together with ParknShop. I believe this donation will give Food Angel additional resources to help more people in need.”

In 2012, ParknShop became the first supermarket in Hong Kong to donate its edible surplus food to Food Angel. In 2013, ParknShop donated HK$600,000 to Food Angel to establish an outreach program providing home delivery meal service to those in need. With cooperation with its many branches, ParknShop donated over 1,300 tonnes of surplus food which helped Food Angel producing over 3.5 million hot meals, accounting for 65% of all meals produced, as well as 300,000 food packs. Additionally, Food Angel and ParknShop has organized “City Food Drive” four years in a row collecting food from citizens at 280 ParknShop locations across Hong Kong. Over 182,000 food items were raised, together with proceeds, totaling HK$4.7 million.
