“Better Health for a Better Hong Kong” is a territory-wide health promotion campaign jointly organised by the Hospital Authority’s Health InfoWorld and the Li Ka-shing Foundation. Targeting the working population, the campaign promotes a healthy lifestyle focusing on “Mental Wellness”, “Regular Exercise” and “Balanced Diet”, and encourages the public to adopt the following six healthy habits:
Mental Wellness
•Take active steps to manage stress
•Adequate sleep
Regular Exercises
•Keep active
•10,000 steps a day
Balanced Diet
>
•3 low-1 high (low fat, low salt, low sugar, high fibre)
•Smart drinking
Launched in 2000, the Campaign has provided free health tests and professional health advice to over 30,000 workers from different walks of life. Academic research has been built in to study the health status and lifestyle of the subjects, leading to suggestions on healthy living. The evidence-based outcome will serve as a point of reference for the Government in formulating its long-term health policy.
“Better Health for a Better Hong Kong” is entering a new phase in 2006. With the unstinting support of the Department of Health and more than 20 community, women and social organisations, Health InfoWorld in conjunction with the Organising Committee of Sha Tin Festival, Lions Clubs International District 303 V Hong Kong & Macau and The League of Health Professionals of Hong Kong are launching a “Better Health for a Better Hong Kong X Experience Healthy Living” programme. Kicked off today (6 August) in Ma On Shan Plaza, this large-scale health promotion programme will reach out to various places in Sha Tin through health talks, exhibitions and free health tests and professional health advice for several thousand residents. It is hoped to have the health messages permeated the whole district, benefiting more than half a million members of the public.
“Better Health for a Better Hong Kong” is very grateful to the Organising Committee of Sha Tin Festival for its support and assistance. The event today was the first step of the collaboration with the 18 District Councils to promote a territory-wide health promotion campaign. “Better Health for a Better Hong Kong” will continue to invite District Councils and join hands with them to promote health lifestyle and encourage the public to act on the suggestions.
Addressing at the kick-off ceremony today, Mr Anthony Wu, Charman of the Hospital Authority, thanked the Li Ka-shing Foundation for its unswerving support and community partners for their active participation over the years. “I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to the Organising Committee of Sha Tin Festival, Lions Clubs International District 303 V Hong Kong & Macau and The League of Health Professionals of Hong Kong, as well as the more than 20 organisations which have supported or sponsored us. We are joining hands to promote the health messages and encourage the public to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Together we will contribute to the prosperity of Hong Kong.”
Mr Wu also said, “As Hong Kong and the whole world are facing the threat of various infectious diseases, for example, influenza and norovirus attacks, there is an imminent need for the public to stay healthy. Healthy living starts from you and me. Everyone kicks his unhealthy habits and knows about disease prevention. The community will be healthy and prosperous. All in all, health brings prosperity.”
“Better Health for a Better Hong Kong” has resulted in an extensive community network. In the new phase, it will continue to move forward building on the foundation of evidence-based experience and research data. A series of varied promotional activities will be held to further advocate the health messages in the community, creating a healthy environment and building a more prosperous Hong Kong.
