Mr Li Ka-shing establishes
a scholarship in memory of
Lord Michael Sandberg of Passfield, OBE, CBE

04 September 2017

(4 September 2017, Hong Kong) Lord Michael Sandberg of Passfield, OBE, CBE, passed away on 2 July 2017 at the age of 90.

As a memorial tribute, Mr Li Ka-shing has established “The Li Ka Shing Foundation Lord Sandberg Memorial Scholarship” with a donation of HK$5 million to two designated UK universities. The contribution will be distributed over 10 years to provide assistance to outstanding DSE students from Hong Kong seeking to pursue undergraduate studies in the UK. The respective universities will have the discretion to each select two to three scholarship recipients each year based on merits and needs, with advice from Michael Sandberg Junior on behalf of the Sandberg Family.

Speaking of Lord Sandberg, Mr Li said, “Lord Sandberg was a true friend of Hong Kong and through his long and illustrious career, including his tenure at HSBC, he was instrumental in making Hong Kong the thriving financial centre it is today. He was always a true advocate for Hong Kong in Britain and created a great many opportunities for many. He was also a dear personal friend, and I will forever treasure fond memories of him. I hope that in a small way this memorial scholarship will help to extend Lord Sandberg’s legacy in Hong Kong and in the UK.”

About the Li Ka Shing Foundation

Established in 1980, the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) has invested HK$20 billion to work on education, medical services and research initiatives globally, with over 80% of our projects located within the Greater China region. In 2006, Mr Li described his philanthropic effort as akin to having another son in the family. He called for a paradigm shift in our Asian culture of giving, through apportioning more of our wealth and means towards social capital so that we could bring forth great hope and promises for the future.
